Deceptive Feelings: Why Your Emotions Can't Be Trusted

The Heart Can’t Be Trusted
Jeremiah 17:9 (KJV) says:
"The heart is deceitful above all things, and desperately wicked: who can know it?"
Your heart—your feelings—can’t be trusted. That’s not just good advice, it’s biblical truth.
Every day, we are bombarded with emotional cues and cultural messages telling us to “follow our heart.” But God’s Word says the opposite.
Your heart will lie to you. Your feelings will shift. Your emotions can be manipulated. That’s why there’s a spiritual war happening right now—and the battlefield is your mind.
The Real Fight: It’s in Your Mind
2 Corinthians 10:3-5 reminds us that the weapons of our warfare are not physical. The fight is spiritual—and it takes place in our thoughts.
The enemy’s oldest trick is deception. And one of his favorite tools? Your own emotions.
He whispers things like:
- “I feel worthless.”
- “I feel like giving up.”
- “I don’t feel like praying.”
- “I feel like this sin isn’t a big deal.”
But you can’t win spiritual battles by living in your feelings.
The Problem With Feeling-Led Faith
Feelings are real, but they’re not reliable. They are influenced by stress, circumstances, fatigue, and even diet. That’s why faith isn’t built on what we feel—it’s built on what God says.
Proverbs 3:5 tells us:
“Trust in the LORD with all thine heart; and lean not unto thine own understanding.”
You don’t need to feel strong—you need to stand on truth.
Gideon: The Enemy Feared What He Couldn’t See
Gideon felt like a nobody. When God called him to lead, he said he was from the weakest tribe. He didn’t feel qualified.
But in Judges 7, God showed Gideon something powerful: the enemy was already terrified of him.
“This is nothing else save the sword of Gideon... into his hand hath God delivered Midian.” (Judges 7:14)
The man who felt weak was actually a mighty warrior in the spirit.
What about you? What has the enemy seen in you that you haven’t seen yet?
Your Family Is Under Attack
Satan knows that strong families make strong churches. That’s why he targets the peace of your home.
Here’s how to fight back:
- Pray together daily—even if it’s short.
- Read scripture together—build on truth.
- Speak life—shut down negativity.
- Guard your home’s atmosphere—be intentional about what you allow in.
You don’t have to be perfect. You just have to be present. Lead your home in truth, not in feelings.
Don’t Fight in the Flesh
You can’t win spiritual battles with natural weapons. Worry, anger, and avoidance won’t work.
2 Corinthians 10 says we must cast down imaginations and take every thought captive.
That means when fear rises, speak faith. When doubt creeps in, quote scripture. When your feelings scream lies, you fight back with truth.
Decide Today: I Won’t Be Led By Feelings
Here’s what God says about you:
- You are loved (Romans 8:39)
- You are chosen (1 Peter 2:9)
- You are more than a conqueror (Romans 8:37)
Make up your mind:
- I will not be ruled by feelings.
- I will trust God’s Word.
- I will fight for my peace, my family, and my calling.
Final Thought: The Enemy Fears a Made-Up Mind
When Gideon believed God over his feelings, everything changed. The people rallied, they worshiped, and God gave the victory.
If you could hear what the enemy says about you—how afraid he is of your obedience—you’d never doubt your calling again.
You are not what you feel. You are what God says.
And when you fight with that truth—you will win.
